James Comey could be hit with same charges Trump faced: report

One of the charges that former FBI Director James Comey could face relates to the mishandling of classified documents, a reporter revealed on Thursday.

The Justice Department announced Wednesday that it hopes to indict Comey for lying to Congress during testimony on Russia's interference in the 2016 election before the statute of limitations expires on Sept. 30.

But another charge being eyed involves the same accusation that was leveled at Donald Trump.

Speaking to MSNBC's Ana Cabrera on Thursday, Carol Leonnig said that the two charges for Comey that she's hearing thrown around as possibilities include lying to Congress and mishandling classified documents.

The DOJ is in a "race to bring a grand jury indictment," Leonnig said, referencing sources she has spoken to in the past 24 hours.

The previous U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, was reportedly told to resign amid his handling of the Comey case. Leonnig reported that Siebert couldn't find the information needed for a slam-dunk case.

Under a new interim U.S. attorney, however, charges are expected any day.

Trump was indicted on charges involving mishandling of classified documents in Florida after claims that he took them from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago club. Judge Aileen Cannon eventually dismissed the charges.
