A man who was appointed to the State Department during Donald Trump's administration was handed a prison sentence Friday for his participation in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, NBC News reported.
Federico Klein was sentenced to 70 months in prison after being convicted of eight felonies as well as misdemeanor offenses.
The government initially sought a 10-year prison sentence for Klein, pointing to messages he sent ahead of Jan. 6 that read, “Hell yea I’m going. I’m a Trump appointee," as well as the fact that he "took time off from work at the State Department to volunteer to travel to Las Vegas" to investigate claims of mass voter fraud in the 2020 election.

At one point during the riot, Klein "wedged a police riot shield in between the doors, helping to force the doors back open and allowing rioters to continue their assaults on police," prosecutors say.
