A military veteran serving as a Congressional representative clashed with Fox News host Martha MacCallum on Wednesday over whether military members are allowed to disobey illegal orders.
Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO), a former Army ranger who completed three tours of duty, and MacCallum discussed Rep. Elissa Slotkin's (D-MI) comments from earlier in the day on her show "The Story." Slotkin said in a social media video featuring several House Democrats that military members do not have to follow orders that violate the Constitution.
“No one has to carry out orders that violate the law, or our Constitution,” the video says. “Know that we have your back… don’t give up the ship.”
MacCallum pushed back on the video's message during her interview with Crow. Crow, one of the members featured in the video, defended the statement.
"Here's an interesting fact for you, Martha," Crow said. "Our men and women are actually very smart, and there are very incredible men and women in our military," Crow said.
"You don't have to remind me," MacCallum replied.
"Apparently, I do," Crow shot back.
"I have great respect for the military!" MacCallum said.
'Well, you don't think they can handle a little reminder about federal law and UCMJ, is what I'm hearing," Crow replied. "A recent survey found that eight out of ten service members deeply understand their obligation of lawful orders...But this is something they're trained on. Go and look at the training, maybe even go and participate and observe some of the training that our men and women go through. It is incredible. We expect a lot of these men and women."
