Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) earned some criticism from foreign policy expert Ian Bremmer on Wednesday for his defiant insistence that the United States should cut off Ukraine from receiving foreign aid.
Appearing on CNN, Bremmer, a political scientist for Eurasia Group, commented on the success Russia has had in convincing many Republicans to tow the Kremlin line when it comes to the war in Ukraine, which Russia launched two years ago.
In particular, he said that Russia has a history of stoking divisions in American politics and he said anything that divides the western alliance will be beneficial to the Kremlin.
"Greater divisions are useful for Russia," Bremmer said. "I mean, they see that the United States is increasingly unwilling to provide additional military support to the Ukrainians."

He then specifically addressed Vance as a Republican politician who has proven to be particularly useful to the Russian government.
"I was at the Munich security conference," he said. "J.D. Vance, channeling former President Trump, was the most outspoken, by far, in saying, 'I don't think we should continue to provide American taxpayer dollars in order to support Ukraine.' That is music to Putin's ears! And of course, the more than the Trump is seen as owning the GOP, the more that he is seen as able to block support that has a majority of Republicans in favor."
Vance is a staunch believer that Europeans must pony up for their own security. He penned an article outlining his position on Monday in the Financial Times.
"There is frankly no good reason that aid from the US should be needed," for Ukraine, he wrote. "Europe is made up of many great nations with productive economies. They ought to have the capacity to handle the conflict, but over decades they have become far too weak. America has been asked to fill the void at tremendous expense to its own citizens."
