Fox News host Jesse Watters inadvertently revealed the GOP's next big immigration scheme on Wednesday during a segment on "The Five."
Waters and co-host Jessica Tarlov argued over whether Democrats had proposed giving free health care to immigrants as part of the government funding process. It is illegal under federal law for the government to provide health care benefits through programs like Medicare and Medicaid to people in the country unlawfully. However, Republicans have used that claim to excuse shutting down the government after funding ran out on Sept. 30.
Republicans eliminated a law that allowed human trafficking victims, domestic abuse survivors, and refugees to receive federal benefits once they arrived, Tarlov said. That is what Democrats are trying to reinstate through the reconciliation process, she added.
"You show up on the border and say you were trafficked, you got it, and you got free health care," Watters said.
"They have protected status!" Tarlov shot back. "That's what they're trying to reverse."
"Exactly!" Watters said flippantly.
