Publicly, House Democrats have been politely urging their Republican colleagues to work together with them to find a compromise candidate to lead the House of Representatives.
Privately, however, the party has been sharpening its knives should the GOP really go through with making ultra-partisan Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) as speaker.
Axios reporter Andrew Solender has posted an internal Democratic strategy memo that outlines how the party plans to make life miserable for Republicans who pull the trigger on backing Jordan.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"The [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee] is committed to ensuring that every battleground Member of the Republican conference who stands and votes for a Speaker Jordan will be making a career ending move," the memo states.
The memo goes on to highlight what it calls examples of Jordan's "extremism" that it will use to hammer away at vulnerable Republicans, including his efforts to illegally keep former President Donald Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election, his scorched-earth opposition tactics that have led to multiple government shutdowns, and his support for a nationwide abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.
For good measure, the memo also mentions the scandal surrounding Jordan's tenure as a wrestling coach at Ohio State University, where he "was allegedly complicit in a sexual assault coverup."
