Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) insists that he's not giving up his bid to become speaker of the House of Representatives, but a new report from Punchbowl News claims that his chances of success are slim to none.
Specifically, Punchbowl writes that "after speaking with dozens of members and aides, it doesn’t look to us like the Ohio Republican has any path to victory" and that he may even lose some votes in a second vote that's set to be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. E.T.
Should that happen, the publication writes, it would "all but doom" his chances of ever becoming House speaker and it would make it more likely that the House would pass a resolution giving current Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry (R-NC) powers to bring legislation to the floor of the House.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Jordan was a highly controversial choice and many Republicans in swing-state districts expressed worries that voting for him could drag down their chances of winning reelection next year.
An internal Democratic strategy memo that leaked this week outlined how the party plans to make life miserable for Republicans if they made Jordan their speaker.
Among other things, the memo highlighted what it called examples of Jordan's "extremism" that the party will use to hammer away at vulnerable Republicans, including his efforts to illegally keep former President Donald Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election, his scorched-earth opposition tactics that have led to multiple government shutdowns, and his support for a nationwide abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.
