Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) delivered a bleak assessment of the state of his party after Rep. Jim Jordan's (R-OH) bid for the speakership crashed and burned for the third time this week.

Speaking with CNN's Manu Raju shortly after the vote, McCarthy said that it was up to Jordan as to whether he wanted to continue his quest for the speaker's gavel despite the fact that he has lost votes on every single ballot cast so far.

When Raju pressed McCarthy for his own personal opinion about the matter, the former House speaker said, "We are in a very bad place right now, yes."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

CNN anchor Jake Tapper, in analyzing McCarthy's remarks, believed that the California Republican was sending a message to Jordan that it was time to end his bid so that the conference could look for an alternative.

"To me, that means, yeah... he's got no path," Tapper said of McCarthy's remarks on Jordan. "He needs to give it up. That's what I took from that. That's my translation."

So far, Jordan has not given any indication about whether he will drop out of the race or stay in to risk losing for a fourth consecutive time.
