A new revision to jobs data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed a staggering 911,000 fewer jobs were added in the 12-month period leading up to March of this year — a revelation that left CNN host Pamela Brown and business correspondent Vanessa Yrkevich stunned on air.
“Nearly a million jobs!” Brown said just moments after the new job revisions were made public. “This is huge! The largest revision on record!”
According to the BLS, the total number of jobs added in the United States from April of 2024 through March of 2025 were revised down by 911,000, with key sectors being hit hard in particular, including trade, transportation, leisure and hospitality, and utilities.
Yrkevich called the annual job revisions “atypical” due to its staggering numbers, which she said were “much higher than what we’ve seen in previous revisions.”
The jobs report that was published in August also showed a struggling economy, its findings so upsetting to President Donald Trump that he fired BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, claiming she had “rigged” the jobs report. CNN’s own Wolf Blitzer couldn’t help but wonder how Trump may react to the latest jobs data, noting it to be “even worse” than last month’s report.
“We'll see if President Trump decides to now do to the Bureau of Labor Statistics [commissioner] what he did in July,” Blitzer said. “He fired the commissioner at that time, he didn't like the numbers, and these numbers are even worse. We'll see what happens and how he reacts to all of this.”
The BLS currently only has a temporary, acting commissioner, William Wiatrowski, who stepped in following McEntarfer’s ousting. Trump has tapped E.J. Antoni, chief economist at the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, to lead the agency, though his lack of experience has led to scrutiny of the nominee, and questions as to whether he will be confirmed to the position by Congress.
