Data scientist explains why Dems won on persuasion — not mobilization

The red wave never manifested the way Republicans thought that it would, but the failures of the GOP are also paired with successes from Democrats, according to one data scientist who spoke to New York Magazine.

As the midterm season began, Democrats faced one strong headwind with inflation and poor job approval for the sitting Democratic president. Center for American Progress data scientist and analyst David Shor explained that the real success comes not from ushering voters to the polls through "get out the vote" efforts, but from persuading independents to trust them over Republicans.

Which party controls Congress? It could be days or weeks before we know

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and Democrats have exulted in outperforming expectations in the midterm elections, even as vote-counting was still in progress and control of both chambers of Congress remained unknown.

The U.S. Senate will go to the winner of two of the last three races where party control is still in doubt in Arizona, Nevada and a Dec. 6 runoff election in Georgia. More unexpected was a close race for the U.S. House, where Democrats still have a small chance at keeping their narrow majority after far outpacing Republicans in toss-up races and competing in some districts thought to be out of reach.

Progressive prosecutors win key races despite GOP attacks on criminal justice reform

We look at the wave of progressive prosecutors elected in Tuesday’s midterms and what the results mean for the movement to reform the criminal justice system. Voters have an “understanding that we can’t incarcerate our way to safety,” says law professor Lara Bazelon, who explains how progressive prosecutors won several key races in blue, purple and red states despite Republican candidates across the country campaigning with a focus on crime and public safety. “The progressive narrative, far from being dead, is very much alive.”

Lauren Boebert breaks 36-hour silence as she remains locked in razor-tight race

Update: Boebert took a 433-vote lead after this article was published as counting continues, The Denver Post reported. But there are still about 7,000 votes to be counted in Pueblo County.

"The remaining votes could give Frisch a chance to regain the lead: So far, Pueblo County voters leaned toward the Democratic candidate from Aspen 54% to Boebert's 46%," the outlet reported, adding that the race would go to an automatic recount if the margin of victory is within 0.5%.

‘Trump is livid’: The Republican Party’s Trump problem

The Republicans' disappointing performance in the midterm elections is also a personal defeat for Donald Trump, who had been counting on the success of the candidates he endorsed to launch his own presidential bid next Tuesday. To make matters worse, Ron DeSantis, his potential rival for 2024, also celebrated a resounding victory in Florida.

Feelings of anger and frustration swept through Mar-a-Lago's gilded halls on Wednesday. The mansion’s owner, Donald Trump, who has been living in Florida since he left the White House, spent election night reeling over the fact that the big "red wave" the Republicans had promised ahead of the midterms had not materialised.

'Unconscionable': Oil expert slams some Midwest gas stations for keeping prices high as costs plummet

On Thursday, Patrick de Haan, a Chicago-based oil industry expert and longtime head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, took to Twitter to call out some gas stations in the Midwest for not passing along their recent cost savings to consumers at the pump.

"Pretty unconscionable that some gas stations in the Great Lakes are holding at the same price they had a week ago, meanwhile their cost has plummeted significantly," wrote de Haan, adding "also props to the stations that have gone down 20c/gal or so in the last week."

GOP operatives still fear taking on Trump even after his 'basket of lemon' candidates blew winnable races

A new report from the Washington Examiner's David Drucker claims that Republican operatives are furious that former President Donald Trump cost them multiple winnable races with candidates that Drucker describes as a "basket of lemons."

Ohio Republican strategist David Myhal went on the record to tell Drucker that "it’s time for Trump to retire" and then added that "I see golf courses and a rocking chair in his future."

'Young people saved this election' for Democrats: Progressives

While control of Congress remained unclear as of Wednesday afternoon, young voters who turned out for Democrats on Tuesday played a key role in blocking a "red wave" that had been anticipated based on previous midterm elections and widely predicted by political pollsters and pundits.

"Young people proved that Gen Z is a vital voting bloc that can and will be the bedrock of the Democratic Party."

Why California Gov. Gavin Newsom will run for president in 2024. And why he won’t

President Gavin Newsom? Watch California's newly reelected Democratic governor closely in 2023. He has been making unmistakable moves that signal his interest. He’s taken on the conservative governors of Florida and Texas and won accolades from Democratic Party insiders for his aggressive, unapologetic stands on issues like gun violence and abortion rights. He’s suggested that President Joe Biden, who turns 80 this month, is not suited for the brutal political climate. The nonpartisan book on Newsom, though, is split. “Ballot box poison,” said Tobe Berkovitz, associate professor of advertising...

Kevin McCarthy will trade Biden impeachment vote for speakership: Former GOP congressman

WASHINGTON, DC — Even with the dust still settling on the midterms — as election officials keep tallying mail-in ballots — one thing’s clear: the ranks of far-right Republicans who consider Joe Biden an illegitimate president are about to swell at the Capitol. Those new members are about to test House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy like never before.

Even with Democrats far exceeding expectations, Republicans are projected to net the 218 seats needed to take back control of the House of Representatives in the New Year, which will spark an inter-party leadership battle. McCarthy will be passed over for speaker, former Republican Congressman David Jolly (R-FL) predicts, unless he cuts a devil’s bargain with this new breed of far-right Republicans.

Defiant Xi re-emerges on global stage, prepares for US competition

At the CCP Congress Xi warned of a challenging geopolitical climate

Beijing (AFP) - Fresh from securing a historic third term as China's top leader, President Xi Jinping is poised for a triumphant re-entry to the world stage at a pivotal G20 summit next week.

After almost three years of self-imposed pandemic isolation where international diplomacy was largely conducted via videolink, China now aims to shore up its global alliances -- especially with developing countries -- in the face of increased competition with the United States and a world environment destabilised by the Ukraine war.
