Republicans rebounded in some suburban Texas counties that had been drifting blue

For two election cycles, Texas Republicans felt the blue waves lapping at the edges of suburban counties that had long been GOP strongholds.

The winning margins for Republicans began to narrow in 2016 when former President Donald Trump was elected. In 2018, counties that hadn’t voted for a Democrat in decades turned out for Beto O’Rourke in his unsuccessful bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz. The El Paso Democrat also forced Cruz into single-digit wins in ruby red Republican counties.

Democrats had popular policies to run on in 2022 — unlike 2010: analysis

On Thursday's edition of MSNBC's "All In," anchor Chris Hayes laid out a key reason why the 2022 midterm election did not pan out as a substantial Republican victory the way the 2010 midterm did under President Barack Obama: Democrats had a far more popular agenda on which to run.

"The Biden agenda, domestic agenda of the Democratic Party, was pretty popular," said Hayes. "Under Joe Biden, unified party control, the Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which among many other provisions, lowers prescription drug costs, invests in clean energy. They passed the American Rescue Plan. It gave people checks, extended all kinds of relief for cities to hire more teachers and things like that. They passed the CHIPS Act, which invests in domestic manufacturing. The president, through executive action, relieved people of their student loan debt. $10,000, as much as $20,000 for others. There was a historic bipartisan infrastructure bill. The president also put the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, which was confirmed by a Democratic Senate."

"Let’s look to the next election. Quit talking about 2020," wrote Grassley.

Young Black and Latino voters seen as key in turning back midterm ‘red wave’

WASHINGTON — Young Black and Latino voters were critical in holding off the Republican “red wave” in several battleground states for U.S. Senate seats and in tight U.S. House races in the midterm elections, according to analyses by researchers and grassroot organizations.

Young, diverse voters between the ages of 18 and 29 had the second-highest youth voter turnout in almost three decades, with youth voter turnout at 31% in the nine battleground states of Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, according to estimates by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, an institute at Tufts University.
