Democrats had popular policies to run on in 2022 — unlike 2010: analysis

On Thursday's edition of MSNBC's "All In," anchor Chris Hayes laid out a key reason why the 2022 midterm election did not pan out as a substantial Republican victory the way the 2010 midterm did under President Barack Obama: Democrats had a far more popular agenda on which to run.

"The Biden agenda, domestic agenda of the Democratic Party, was pretty popular," said Hayes. "Under Joe Biden, unified party control, the Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which among many other provisions, lowers prescription drug costs, invests in clean energy. They passed the American Rescue Plan. It gave people checks, extended all kinds of relief for cities to hire more teachers and things like that. They passed the CHIPS Act, which invests in domestic manufacturing. The president, through executive action, relieved people of their student loan debt. $10,000, as much as $20,000 for others. There was a historic bipartisan infrastructure bill. The president also put the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, which was confirmed by a Democratic Senate."

Powerful Murdoch media dumps on Trump

Losing media support: Former US President Donald Trump at a Florida rally before the midterm elections that took place on Tuesday

Washington (AFP) - The powerful media empire of conservative billionaire Rupert Murdoch appeared to turn its back Thursday on Donald Trump, labeling the former US president a "loser" who shows "increasingly poor judgement" after the midterm elections.

Just days before he is expected to announce his 2024 White House candidacy, the Wall Street Journal, the flagship of Murdoch's News Corp, declared in an editorial that "Trump Is the Republican Party's Biggest Loser," pointing to the party's disappointing performance in Tuesday's midterms.

'Quit talking about 2020': Iowa Republican begs GOP to let go of Trump's election rage

On Wednesday, following the GOP's surprisingly lackluster performance in the 2022 midterm elections, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who won his own race fairly effortlessly, took to Twitter to implore the party to move beyond conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election — although he declined to specifically mention former President Donald Trump by name.

"Let’s look to the next election. Quit talking about 2020," wrote Grassley.

Young Black and Latino voters seen as key in turning back midterm ‘red wave’

WASHINGTON — Young Black and Latino voters were critical in holding off the Republican “red wave” in several battleground states for U.S. Senate seats and in tight U.S. House races in the midterm elections, according to analyses by researchers and grassroot organizations.

Young, diverse voters between the ages of 18 and 29 had the second-highest youth voter turnout in almost three decades, with youth voter turnout at 31% in the nine battleground states of Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, according to estimates by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, an institute at Tufts University.

Jon Stewart and advocates who pushed to aid veterans should get Presidential Medal of Freedom, Sen. Gillibrand tells Biden

WASHINGTON — Jon Stewart and fellow advocates who cajoled Congress into passing legislation to help veterans sickened by massive burn pits overseas deserve the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said in a letter to President Joe Biden on Thursday. For years, Congress had failed to address the impacts of burn pits — the massive, open-air trash fires that the military used to incinerate everything from medical waste to plastic and ammunition during the global war on terror. Some of the pits were the size of football fields, and federal officials believe at least 3.5 million m...

Data scientist explains why Dems won on persuasion — not mobilization

The red wave never manifested the way Republicans thought that it would, but the failures of the GOP are also paired with successes from Democrats, according to one data scientist who spoke to New York Magazine.

As the midterm season began, Democrats faced one strong headwind with inflation and poor job approval for the sitting Democratic president. Center for American Progress data scientist and analyst David Shor explained that the real success comes not from ushering voters to the polls through "get out the vote" efforts, but from persuading independents to trust them over Republicans.

Which party controls Congress? It could be days or weeks before we know

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and Democrats have exulted in outperforming expectations in the midterm elections, even as vote-counting was still in progress and control of both chambers of Congress remained unknown.

The U.S. Senate will go to the winner of two of the last three races where party control is still in doubt in Arizona, Nevada and a Dec. 6 runoff election in Georgia. More unexpected was a close race for the U.S. House, where Democrats still have a small chance at keeping their narrow majority after far outpacing Republicans in toss-up races and competing in some districts thought to be out of reach.

Progressive prosecutors win key races despite GOP attacks on criminal justice reform

We look at the wave of progressive prosecutors elected in Tuesday’s midterms and what the results mean for the movement to reform the criminal justice system. Voters have an “understanding that we can’t incarcerate our way to safety,” says law professor Lara Bazelon, who explains how progressive prosecutors won several key races in blue, purple and red states despite Republican candidates across the country campaigning with a focus on crime and public safety. “The progressive narrative, far from being dead, is very much alive.”

Lauren Boebert breaks 36-hour silence as she remains locked in razor-tight race

Update: Boebert took a 433-vote lead after this article was published as counting continues, The Denver Post reported. But there are still about 7,000 votes to be counted in Pueblo County.

"The remaining votes could give Frisch a chance to regain the lead: So far, Pueblo County voters leaned toward the Democratic candidate from Aspen 54% to Boebert's 46%," the outlet reported, adding that the race would go to an automatic recount if the margin of victory is within 0.5%.

‘Trump is livid’: The Republican Party’s Trump problem

The Republicans' disappointing performance in the midterm elections is also a personal defeat for Donald Trump, who had been counting on the success of the candidates he endorsed to launch his own presidential bid next Tuesday. To make matters worse, Ron DeSantis, his potential rival for 2024, also celebrated a resounding victory in Florida.

Feelings of anger and frustration swept through Mar-a-Lago's gilded halls on Wednesday. The mansion’s owner, Donald Trump, who has been living in Florida since he left the White House, spent election night reeling over the fact that the big "red wave" the Republicans had promised ahead of the midterms had not materialised.
