Two experts break down the James Webb Space Telescope’s first images, and explain what we’ve already learned

Today we saw the release of the first batch of images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. This is something we have both been waiting on for nearly 25 years. Back in those days, we were analysing the first Hubble images of the distant universe, and the details they revealed were shocking compared to anything we’d seen in ground-based images.

It seems the bar has been raised once again, and Webb is set to herald a new age for astronomy and space research. Its large mirror helps it produce images that are two to three times sharper than Hubble’s, and which go much deeper into space (which means it can see fainter sources).

'He’s making everything all about him': Republicans furious Trump is disrupting their plans

According to a report from the Guardian's Ed Pilkington, Republican leaders are begging Donald Trump to put aside his complaints that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him because he is making their efforts to regain majorities in both chambers more difficult.

In interviews with the Guardian, a top conservative pollster and a longtime Republican Party donor took shots at the former president for making everything about himself instead of pitching in and helping GOP candidates take part in what Republicans believe will be a "historic" election.

Biden abandons plan to nominate anti-abortion judge in Kentucky

President Joe Biden no longer plans to nominate a Republican who has opposed abortion restrictions to become a federal judge in Kentucky because Republican Senator Rand Paul of that state has declined to support him, the White House said on Friday.

Biden's decision to drop Chad Meredith from consideration came after progressives and abortion-rights supporters came out strongly against the nominee, who had the backing of Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Fingered: Meet the notorious Trump operative who delivered the false elector lists

Politico on Friday identified the Donald Trump aide who delivered lists of fake electors in a bid to get them to Mike Pence.

Mike Kelly’s (R-PA) chief of staff at the time, both people told Politico," Kyle Cheney and Nicholas Wu reported. "Kelly was a Trump ally in the effort to overturn the 2020 election, and his then-top aide received the documents from Roman before deputizing a colleague to disseminate copies on Capitol Hill, according to both people."

"A major focus of the inquiry has been Trump's Jan. 2, 2021, telephone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in which the former president urged the state official to tilt the 2020 statewide vote in his favor."

The US House of Representatives adopted two bills on Friday aimed at protecting access to abortion after the Supreme Court ruled that individual states can ban or restrict the procedure.
