Joe Scarborough has shared what he and Donald Trump spoke about the last time he called the president.
In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Morning Joe show host confirmed he had called Trump twice in the last seven years. The pair have known each other, Scarborough says, for more than 25 years, but it appears their relationship is strained, with Trump mocking the Morning Joe show ratings in November last year.
But Scarborough, a former GOP representative, says he has spoken to the president twice in the last seven years. Once, he told Kimmel, was shortly after an assassination attempt on Trump in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
Speaking to Kimmel, Scarborough confirmed two phone calls over the last seven years. One off the record chat was held recently, while a previous call was made shortly after Trump's appearance in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024.
Scarborough said, "I hadn't talked to him for seven years until after the assassination attempt, I called him up, we'd known each other for 25 years, I called him up and said, 'I'm glad you're okay, frightening times, I'll be praying for your safety and your health. Even if, at the time, I'm calling you a fascist every day on the show. Even if I disagree with you, I'm praying for your health and your safety.'
"But I called him after he announced that he called Tim Walz and he called the mayor of Minneapolis. I said, 'Listen,' I don't usually do this but I called him up and I said, 'If you don't mind, off the record, tell me about the call.' And he told me about the call.
"And I said, 'You know, Mr. President, I think it's a good thing for Americans to see you, Tim Walz, and the mayor of Minneapolis talking to each other. We need more of that.'"
