House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) is trying to line up the votes to succeed the ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as Speaker of the House, with former President Donald Trump's endorsement.
But Jordan would make a far better co-defendant in Trump's 2020 election charges than he would any sort of leader in high office, said former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner on his "Justice Matters" show Friday.
"So Jim Jordan wants to be Speaker of the House of Representatives," said Kirschner. "Well you know what? As a former career prosecutor, based on the evidence I've seen, a better fit for Jim Jordan would be an indicted co-defendant of Donald Trump's for trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Kirschner regaled his listeners with an article written by commentator Dean Obeidallah, documenting all of the ways Jordan furthered Trump's conspiracy, from making false claims about election fraud, to attending "Stop the Steal" rallies, to meeting directly with some of the officials currently implicated in trying to stop the certification of states. He even discussed the possibility with Trump of directing his supporters to "march to the Capitol" on January 6, when a pro-Trump mob went on to attack police, break into the Capitol, and threaten members of Congress.
In light of all this, Kirschner concluded, Jordan has no business leading the lower chamber of Congress.
"He is using his position as chair of the House Judiciary Committee to try to help Donald Trump get away with his crimes, to help Donald Trump avoid being held accountable for his crimes, and in a very real sense, Jim Jordan is acting as an accessory after the fact to Donald Trump's crimes," said Kirschner. "Knowing that crimes against the United States have been committed by another, he is actively helping Donald Trump avoid responsibility. Jim Jordan, Speaker of the House of Representatives? Jim Jordan ought to be a co-defendant."
