Joy Reid railed against her former employer, MSNBC, for ordering her not to use social media the way she wanted to.
“Anytime I would tweet anything, I would get calls—I would get, ‘Please get off Twitter, we hate it,’” Reid said during an episode of Joy’s House on Substack. She claims it was her social media reach had the bosses at MSNBC "horrified.”
“They just don’t like that it pulls their talent and their reporters out of their control because now you’re not running what you’re tweeting through Standards and Practices,” Reid said. “It’s giving your personality directly to the audience, which they don’t like because it’s no longer managed and curated by them.”
Reid was joined by Katie Couric, who left MSNBC’s parent company NBC in 2006, on the episode. The women were speaking on how social media has given them better connectivity to their viewers since leaving their respective networks.
Couric asked, “So what exactly happened at MSNBC?”
Reid noted she had been asked that question “So many times,” before responding “People think that I’m just saying it to B.S., but I’m being honest with you—I don’t know.”

Reid claimed, “Literally, Katie, my show, The ReidOut, my wonderful team and I, we won an NAACP Image Award in late January, and within less than a month from that, they canceled our show.”
She went on to be more specific on the timing between winning the NAACP award and her cancellation, “Two weeks after we won the award, it came out and we were completely blindsided to the point where when I first was told on a Friday night that this story had dropped by a guy called Dylan Byers.”
Reid’s MSNBC show “The ReidOut” was canceled in February. The move was described as part of a network-wide makeover after President Donald Trump’s election.
The former anchor is now ready to make her mark on the digital platform. Her new YouTube show “The Joy Reid Show” is expected to launch on June 9, according to the Daily Beast.
