Former President Donald Trump took time during his news conference at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey to rage against Vice President Kamala Harris' home state of California, calling it "one of the worst run states" and accusing her and Gov. Gavin Newsom of destroying the quality of life there.

"Many people are leaving the state, sixth-most, from her state ... she destroyed as attorney general, she destroyed California, along with Gavin Newscum and she — San Francisco you know, is a great city 15 years ago, now it's considered almost unlivable, you can't live there," said Trump. "And what they've done to that great state with the beautiful weather like this, where they have this weather all the time. And they have the ocean, they have the sun, they have everything good. But what they've done to it is a shame, and she's going to do the same thing to our country."

There's just one problem with Trump's remarks. Fifteen years ago — the era he believes San Francisco was "great" — Kamala Harris was serving as San Francisco's district attorney.

To boot, Gavin Newsom was mayor of the city at the time.

California remains the most populous and one of the most economically wealthy states in the entire country; however, the state is also plagued by high living costs, economic inequality and one of the worst homelessness rates in the country, all of which are at least in part attributable to a severe housing shortage. Both Harris in her capacity as vice president, and Newsom at the state level, have focused much of their energy on boosting the supply of housing to tackle the issue.

Trump's conference, which was intended to focus on the economy, like his speech Wednesday in North Carolina, has been widely panned by onlookers as low-energy, with some people commenting that "his heart's not really in it."
