Former Trump White House counselor Kellyanne Conway is plotting to help Republicans navigate the perilous politics of reproductive rights by urging them to focus on support for legalized contraception.

Salon's Amanda Marcotte, however, predicts that Conway's newest scheme is "destined to backfire" against the GOP.

In her latest column, Marcotte described Conway's efforts to insert herself into Republicans' 2024 abortion messaging as a way to "regain some relevance after her stint as one of the more cringe-worthy talking heads of the Trump White House."

She then dove into the substance of Conway's proposal and explained why it was doomed to flop.

"What would it mean for Republicans to 'promote' contraception, however?" she asked rhetorically. "One thing it certainly can't mean is taking any action to make it easier for women to access birth control. On the contrary, the favorite way of Republicans to 'promote' birth control is to do everything they can to make it harder to get."

She then noted that Republicans all voted against a bill intended to secure Americans' rights to access contraception, and that conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has suggested that any such right to contraception should not be seen as constitutionally protected.

"Conway has no real interest in turning Republicans away from their war on contraception," Marcotte observed. "She just wants them to pretend to reporters and voters that they are fine with birth control, and hope no one follows up by checking the record."
