Former Trump White House counselor Kellyanne Conway argued that Tuesday's election loss in New York's third congressional district meant it was time for Republicans to double down on their unpopular abortion policies.

Appearing on Fox News, Conway noted that Democrat Tom Suozzi won his race for the seat vacated by George Santos by pushing for tougher standards for allowing immigrants into the country, despite the fact that Democrats have been traditionally seen as the party more welcoming to immigrants.

However, Conway thought that Republicans could take lessons from that race when it comes to how they talk about abortion rights.

"Instead of being ostriches with their heads in the sand ... they should be peacocks," said Conway. "Say, 'This is what it means to be pro-life in 2024, this is what it means to be pro-choice in 2024.' Instead of hiding, own it and message it!"

It's unclear, however, if Conway is actually asking Republicans to rethink their positions on abortion bans, which have proven unpopular even in red states such as Ohio and Kansas, where voters have rejected them in ballot initiatives.

Late last year, Conway urged anti-abortion Republicans to emphasize that they support access to contraception, even though they want to make abortion illegal, as a way to soften their image among voters.
