Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced he would hold a vote on his future as House Speaker's chair Tuesday afternoon, Punchbowl's Jake Sherman tweeted.
But behind the scenes, the thought is that someone will quickly respond to the motion to remove McCarthy with a motion to table the vote. Republicans can then vote on that.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
The one wildcard is what Democrats do. With the help of the far-right and the Democrats, the motion to table could be rejected and the motion to remove McCarthy could pass.
Punchbowl's John Bresnahan cited Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) anticipating Democrats will join the far right. Not doing so, he said, "would be committing political malpractice."
Reporters are chasing down members of the Freedom Caucus to craft their own calculations on how the vote will go. It's still too early to tell.
