Kevin McCarthy refuses to make a deal with Democrats to stay Speaker
Fox News/screen grab

Speaker Kevin McCarthy told the press on Tuesday morning that he has no interest in making a deal with Democrats to stay in power. He explained that, as a conservative, he's not certain what he could offer Democrats in return.

He made it clear that he would not compromise his conservatism to save his job.

“If five Republicans go with Democrats, then I’m out," said McCarthy.

Still, McCarthy said that he's not worried and is optimistic and "confident" he'll be fine.

He then confessed that he thinks it's likely he'll be removed by Democrats.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) needs just five Republican votes to join with Democrats if they vote to vacate and McCarthy will be removed.

Democrats met behind closed doors to discuss how they'll respond and whether they'll vote to remove McCarthy along with Gaetz.

If McCarthy is removed, there must be another series of votes to get a speaker – unless House members decide to continue without one.
