The prisoner suspected of stabbing Larry Nassar said the now-incarcerated former sports doctor provoked the attack when he made a lewd comment while they were watching a tennis match on TV, the Associated Press reported.
Inmate Shane McMillan attacked Nassar with a makeshift weapon and stabbed him multiple times in the neck, chest and back. The attack reportedly ended when other inmates intervened.
Nassar was taken to the hospital where he remains in stable condition Wednesday with injuries including a collapsed lung.
McMillan told prison workers that he attacked Nassar because the disgraced sports doctor "made a comment about wanting to see girls playing in the Wimbledon women’s match," according to a source speaking to the AP.
