Longtime Donald Trump ally and failed congressional candidate Laura Loomer had a meltdown on Tuesday over the current state of the New York City mayoral primary which, despite a crowded field, has largely come down to two candidates: disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and Zohran Mamdani, a young Muslim candidate affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America.
It's Mamdani in particular that terrifies Loomer, a far-right white nationalist sympathizer who describes herself as a "proud Islamophobe."
"Say goodbye to NYC today," wrote Loomer on X. "A Muslim communist is likely going to win the Democrat primary for mayor because the GOP didn’t do anything to raise awareness about how dangerous he is. NYC is about to become London."
Her reference to London is a jab at that city's Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan.
Loomer, whose views are so extreme Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has called her a "racist" and warned Trump to stop associating with her, came under controversy earlier this week for proclaiming every Jew and Christian in U.S. cities with a notable Muslim population should arm themselves.
For most of the New York primary, which on Tuesday will determine the Democratic nominee for mayor, Cuomo — who is trying to overcome years of sexual misconduct allegations and claims that he mismanaged nursing homes during the COVID pandemic — has had a commanding lead over Mamdani.
But this gap has been shrinking, particularly as Mamdani has consolidated support from other rivals in the ranked-choice voting system, with a new poll suggesting the race is running about even when ranked-choice results are applied.
Early voting data has showed an unusual surge of young voters in the mayoral primary, with older, more Cuomo-favoring voting blocs expected to turn out today.
