Economists are virtually monolithic in their view that a default on the debt limit would trigger significant global turmoil, but Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) apparently does not share that view.
The far-right congresswoman Tuesday cast doubt on the opinions of experts, calling the debt ceiling a “conspiracy” and said Americans are being “gaslit.”
“I'm grateful that we have the gavel to have actual oversight, but there has to be transparency for the American people rather than just gaslighting on the media all the time and all the news all the time. That's all that has been taking place for years now,” Boebert said during an appearance on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” talk show.
Boebert was responding to a question from Bannon over whether her constituents “would like to see what this financial crisis of baptism really is.”
“The American people are kept in the dark about what's really going on,” Boebert said.

“They get talking points sent to them by the (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee) and by (Senate Majority Leader) Chuck Schumer and (former House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi and (House Minority Leader) Hakeem Jeffries and then the media help push that, and they're being completely gaslit, so let's produce the documents and show us real information.
“And if you can't, maybe you just made the whole thing up and we're not going to default on June 1.”
