Attorneys general are mobilizing across the United States to take President Donald Trump to court in an effort to stop unconstitutional executive orders — with most hopes being pinned on his longtime foe.

Politico reported Tuesday that New York AG Letitia James has added her name and the state of New York to a lawsuit opposing the presidential order eliminating birthright citizenship. The report painted James as a secret weapon of the Trump opposition.

Last month, James held a press conference about a settlement the state reached with a pharmaceutical company over opioid addiction.

At the end of the press conference, she read a statement signed by 10 other Democratic prosecutors warning that they have become willing to fight back against Trump.

However, James went off script when reading the statement, adding, “We are not individuals who are the face of resistance. We are willing to work with the office of President Trump. But when it comes to any violation of the United States Constitution or the rights of vulnerable and marginalized populations, including but not limited to immigrant communities, we will enforce the law.”

"James, who won a major lawsuit against Trump in 2024, is widely viewed in New York politics as a formidable figure," stated the report. "Now they’re eyeing the state’s leading lawyer as she positions herself to defend New York’s interests in a Trump administration."

James successfully sued Trump and his business, claiming fraud because it inflated value prices in an attempt to get favorable insurance and loan rates. He reacted with multiple personal attacks against her, calling her a racist and nicknaming her "Peekaboo."

“It’s her moment to own,” Brooklyn Assemblymember Brian Cunningham (D) told Politico, saying James has the power to protect New Yorkers from federal attacks.

The response has been a swift backlash from Trump's supporters. “Yeah, my life has been threatened,” James told Politico. “But at the end of the day, you can’t be paralyzed by fear.”

Trump has also warned he thought James should be “arrested and punished."
