An arrest warrant for U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was issued by Russia Monday following comments made during his trip to Ukraine, CBS News reported.
In a spliced video that caused outrage in Russia over the weekend, Graham was seen saying that “Russians are dying” and that the U.S. financial assistance to Ukraine is the “best money we’ve ever spent.” The comments were taken out of context, several U.S. reports said.
On Monday, Russia’s top criminal investigation agency, the Investigative Committee, opened a criminal inquiry into the senator. The Interior Ministry then issued a warrant for his arrest.
“It’s hard to imagine a greater shame for the country than having such senators,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Graham had met with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday.
