Following Sen. Lindsey Graham's (R-SC) sudden death, Republican senators are in quiet panic and searching for someone to fill his role as President Donald Trump's primary intermediary in the Senate.
According to Politico, no other senator possesses Graham's unique combination of Trump's personal trust, legislative experience, and dealmaking skills.
Graham's final act exemplified his critical role: he called Trump before his death to discuss the stalled SAVE America Act, an elections bill Graham advocated for, while explaining to the White House why most Republicans refused to eliminate the filibuster to pass it.
Graham's primary function was translating Trump's demands to reluctant senators while explaining legislative realities to an impatient president.
"Lindsey knew his place, but he was the only senator who could tell Trump what he didn't want to hear and not face his backlash," one Republican lawmaker admitted privately.
Several senators, including Katie Britt (R-AL) and Rick Scott (R-FL), maintain regular contact with Trump. Yet none combine Graham's decades of Senate experience and skill at managing Trump's temperament, according to Politico.
