In a speech to the Mackinac Policy Conference in Michigan Thursday, former GOP congresswoman Liz Cheney launched her latest attack on the GOP as a party that's "embraced insurrection" and is "willingly trapped in a cult of personality," Mlive.com reported.
“The nation really needs to have parties that can have a substantive debate about policy,” Cheney said.
“I don’t have any regrets about the choices I made except my choice to support Donald Trump. I regret that,” she continued. “After it became clear that Donald Trump was willing to go to war with rule of law, there was no moment where there was another possible honorable choice.”
She went on to say that if Trump is not "held accountable for what he did, then what he did becomes acceptable, and we will see it again and again."
Cheney didn't do anything to confirm or deny rumors that she may run for president, saying, “I’m not making any announcements today. I am really focused on making sure that Donald Trump isn’t anywhere close to the Oval Office.”
In 2021, Cheney was removed by the party from a congressional leadership position because she criticized Trump's claims of election fraud. Her membership of the Wyoming Republican Party was revoked in November 2021.
