Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) on Monday morning hammered Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) for pushing a bogus conspiracy theory about the January 6th, 2021 assault on the United States Capitol building.
Lee on Sunday promoted a post on Twitter that falsely claimed that January 6th rioter Kevin Lyons was flashing a badge while in the Capitol, indicating that he was actually a law enforcement official.
"I can’t wait to ask FBI Director Christopher Wray about this at our next oversight hearing," wrote Lee in response. "I predict that, as always, his answers will be 97% information-free."
In reality, as reported by NBC News' Ryan Reilly, Lyons was holding a vape in his hands in footage taken during the Capitol and he was recently sentenced to four years in prison, which indicates that he was certainly not an undercover federal agent.
Lee's promotion of this easily debunked theory earned him the ire of Cheney, who scolded him for peddling nonsense when he was smart enough to know better.
"You’re a lawyer, Mike," she wrote. "You’re capable of understanding the scores of J6 verdicts & rulings in our federal courts."
Cheney also brought up the fact that Lee himself on January 6th voted to certify the results of the election, as he said that he didn't believe that former Vice President Mike Pence had the power to unilaterally throw out election results.
"You didn’t object to electors on J6 because you knew what Trump was doing was unconstitutional and you know what you’re doing now is wrong," she said.
