Former President Donald Trump is "desperate" to get a stay at the Supreme Court because he doesn't want people who once worked for him to tell their stories to the American people, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) wrote on X Monday.

The former president filed his motion asking the justices to block the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals' decision that he is not immune from prosecution in the federal election interference case, just ahead of the deadline to do so.

"Trump is seeking a stay because he knows what will happen at trial: His own WH, DOJ, and campaign officials who testified against him before the grand jury would testify in open court," wrote Cheney. "He is desperate to prevent Americans from hearing that testimony."

Cheney was one of the former president's harshest critics from the Republican side of the House, and served on the January 6 Committee, before being ousted as chair of the House Republican Conference and later in the primary for her re-election.

The Supreme Court's decision on whether, and how soon, to take up Trump's immunity claim could decide whether there is enough time to hold the trial at all prior to the 2024 election.

Among other things, Trump's attorneys argued in the application for a stay that the former president can't adequately speak to American voters if he is stuck in a criminal courtroom during the campaign season.
