President Donald Trump is pressing that U.S. citizens can have their right to due process taken away just as he did with the immigrants sent to a prison in El Salvador without a trial.
The New York Post revealed in an exclusive that Trump wants to see anyone in Los Angeles burning an American flag behind bars.
"I happen to think if you burn an American flag — because they were burning a lot of flags in Los Angeles — I think you go to jail for one year,” he said. “Just automatic.”
The Fifth Amendment to the Constitution says no one shall be "deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law."
Speaking to Miranda Devine for her Post podcast, Trump also justified his claim that he could arrest Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
"Well, he’s not doing a good job," Trump claimed as the reason for the arrest. "In theory, you could. It’s almost like a dissipation of duty. Nobody’s ever seen anything like that.”
Trump claimed he spoke with Newsom late Friday by phone, telling the governor, "You know your city's burning down. Your state is in bad trouble."
Newsom posted on X Tuesday that Trump never called him or even left a voicemail. He went on to imply that Trump may not be cognitively aware.
"Americans should be alarmed that a President deploying Marines onto our streets doesn’t even know who he’s talking to," he said.
Los Angeles was not "burning down" as it was in January. Protesters set autonomous vehicles ablaze. The reason, The Verge explained, is that Waymo's cars store footage from the car's surrounding environment and the company has been known to share it with law enforcement agencies.
