Democratic Senator Joe Manchin announced on Thursday that he won't run for re-election next year.
Manchin, who has clashed with President Joe Biden and other Democrats at times, was recently listed number one on a news report outlining Senate seats that could be potentially flipped in 2024.
Now, Manchin says he will not run again, and will instead "fight to unite the middle."
"To the West Virginians who have put their trust in me and fought side by side to make our state better - it has been an honor of my life to serve you. Thank you."
CNN's Manu Raju said Manchin told him, "When the time is right, the time is right."
