One-time Republican strategist Matthew Dowd, who worked on the successful 2004 campaign to reelect former President George W. Bush, said that former President Donald Trump has his work cut out for him over the next several weeks.

Appearing on MSNBC, Dowd said that Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign appears to be far more organized at this stage of the 2024 presidential race, especially in the realm of message discipline.

"You have to try to win each day," he said. "The Harris-Walz effort today is much better positioned to win each day, or win more days of the 85. Trump has to catch up both in organization and he has to figure out a way not to be his chaotic self and establish some level of message discipline."

Dowd then pointed to Trump's decision to do an interview with X CEO Elon Musk in which Trump praised Musk for firing workers who wanted to form a union.

"You don't go to a platform hosted by Elon Musk to establish message discipline, that's the first problem," Dowd said while trying to hold back laughter. "Second... there's key states in this election -- Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona -- all have this dominant force of union workers where if they're activated and enthusiastic behind a candidate, which is what they seem to be moving toward with Harris-Walz, it's a very, very huge problem for Donald Trump."

Given this, said Dowd, Trump's praise of Musk for firing workers seemed to be an example of him "going out of his way to p--- off as many people as possible."
