GOP impeachment of Mayorkas in doubt as skeptical GOP lawmakers pump the brakes

The effort by House Republicans to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appears to be going off the rails.

Republicans have for months moved for the impeachment, arguing that he has been derelict in his duties in controlling the border, even though they seem fuzzy on what laws they are actually accusing him of violating or of not properly enforcing. According to multiple reporters on Capitol Hill, however, they may be rapidly losing the votes necessary to impeach him with their bare majority.

According to Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News, Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) recently joined Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) in signaling to Republicans behind closed doors that he is opposed to the impeachment.

This already jeopardizes the whole endeavor; Republicans are down to just a 1-seat majority due to several resignations and the expulsion of Rep. George Santos (R-NY).

But they may not be the only ones. According to Axios' Juliegrace Brufke, other Republican lawmakers who have privately expressed objections include Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL). One unnamed GOP lawmaker told reporters, "Gallagher not supporting impeachment was a shock."

All of this comes as Republicans press forward with the also-floundering project of impeaching President Joe Biden himself, as they have failed to find any evidence that he benefited financially from his son Hunter's overseas deals.
