Right-wing commentator Meghan McCain enraged gun violence activist Fred Guttenberg on Friday, by claiming political violence is being "glorified" by the left in the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

"I think the fundamental difference between the right and the left in this country is that the left glorifies death — particularly of adversaries and the right does not," said McCain in a post on X. "And it’s not something I think I really have fully faced until Charlie’s assassination. And it’s petrifying."

Guttenberg, who lost his daughter in the Parkland school shooting, did not mince words in his response.

"What the f--- are you talking about @MeghanMcCain?" wrote Guttenberg. "As a national gun safety activist, I have been subjected to threats to my life and safety, by the right. Over the past 2 days, the right has been calling for war and violence against the left. On January 6th the right had a noose to publicly hang Mike Pence."

"You have fallen so far from the McCain family tree," he added, referencing her father, the late Sen. John McCain of Arizona, and his reputation as a bipartisan consensus-builder. "You must be such an embarrassment to them."

In the wake of the Kirk assassination, politicians on both sides have been quick to offer prayers and condolences. However, this hasn't always been the case in other violent crimes against politicians; in 2023, when the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was attacked in their home by a hammer-wielding assailant, President Donald Trump, then a candidate, mocked the situation.
