'Authoritarian who only serves himself': Ex-D.C. cop rains hell on second-term Trump plan

Former Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone warned Americans about the dangers of a second Donald Trump presidency during a press event outside of the courthouse in Manhattan where the former president is currently on trial for alleged illegal efforts to cover up hush-money payments.

Although actor Robert DeNiro took a starring role during the event, Fanone made his own case for why putting Trump back in the White House would lead to a dark future for the United States.

He began by recounting how Trump's lies about the 2020 election incited supporters into launching an assault on the United States Capitol building on January 6th, 2021, and he noted that Trump is still pushing these lies about the election to this day.

He then turned his attention to what he said Trump's prior actions portended for a second term.

"At the end of the day, this election is about Donald Trump and his vision for the office of the president of the United States," he said. "Not a public servant who answers to... the people who elected him, but as an authoritarian who answers to and only serves himself."

Although Fanone says he backed Trump during the 2020 election, his mind about the former president changed when he incited a mob of supporters to riot at the Capitol, which endangered the lives of both elected officials and law enforcement officers tasked with guarding it.

Although Trump initially tried to distance himself from the rioters who stormed the Capitol on his behalf, he has since embraced their cause by calling them "hostages" of the federal government and vowing to pardon them should he win another term in the White House.
