'We need to keep Congress': RNC chair declines to back third Trump term 'at this point'
Fox News/screen grab

Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley declined to offer his support to President Donald Trump for a third term in office.

During a Monday interview on Fox News, host Jacqui Heinrich noted that Trump had signaled the possibility of a third term in a weekend interview and said he was "not joking" about the prospect.

"I just want to ask about the president's comments this weekend sort of floating the the prospect of a third term. Do you think that he's serious about that?" Heinrich said. "Is that something that you would support?"

Whatley said he was more concerned with Republicans maintaining control of the House of Representatives.

"I don't think that that's a real serious conversation at this point in time right now. What the president is focused on is delivering for the American people every single day," he said, declining to endorse Trump. "We need to keep Congress next year to be able to do it, and that's what we're working on every day."
