MSNBC anchor Alex Witt was stunned on Sunday after reporting on a deadly attack on a Mormon church in Michigan.

At least one person was killed and nine others injured after a 40-year-old gunman opened fire on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan. Authorities said the gunman drove the truck through the church's front door before the shooting started. He then set the church on fire and took his own life.

Witt spoke with Tom Manger, the former U.S. Capitol Police chief, about the incident on Sunday's broadcast of "Alex Witt Reports."

Witt asked if Manger expected more congregations to increase security following the attack.

"You have parishioners that go to church armed, taking turns," Witt said. "Congregants sign up for security duty armed with guns at the front doors of their church. Is this what it's coming to?"

"Yes, it is, unfortunately," Manger said. "Even the church that I attend, there are a number of police officers that attend this church, and they have gotten a group together. And in fact, when they go to the service, they're armed. They stand in the back of the church just to keep a watch on what's going on both inside and outside of the church.

"You look at any government building now that has the bollards that are used to prohibit vehicles from getting too close to a building," he continued. "I think those are just going to become ubiquitous."

Witt shook her head in a stunned silence.
