'Inmates taking over the asylum' as McConnell loses control of Senate GOP: analysis

As House Republicans descend in to chaos over their inability to elect a speaker, Senate Republicans are also mired in their own dysfunction, said former GOP strategist Tim Miller in a video released on Wednesday — in fact, he argued, under Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) "things in the Senate are not any better, and the inmates are taking over the asylum" as the "MAGA senators" continue to "bully" their leader.

For starters, said Miller, there's Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), a high-ranking GOP official, who went out of his way to endorse failed gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake for Senate in Arizona — "the only person more obsessed with election denialism than Donald Trump." And he's doing that because "they're seeing what's happening over in the House. They know if you want to be a leader in the Republican Party in the future, you need to embrace the MAGA and you need to embrace the crazy. And they see how Jim Jordan is being rewarded for his unabashed advancement of conspiracy theories."

That's only the beginning of McConnell's inability to hold a sensible line in his party, continued Miller.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

For example, the GOP leader has also been powerless in the face of Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) blockading military promotions during an outbreak of war in the Middle East in his quest to force the Pentagon to abolish medical leave for troops who need abortions, and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) blocking ambassadorships in an effort to force the government to release more information on the origins of COVID-19, to validate his unsupported beliefs that it came about through taxpayer-funded gain-of-function research.

All of this adds up to a Senate that is incapable of performing some of its basic functions, Miller continued.

"We have two totally dysfunctional houses," said Miller. "So that's what this party is right now. Kari Lake, Jim Jordan, Donald Trump. these are the people with the juice, these are the people with the power, the Mitch McConnells of the world are on their way out."
