Former Republican Senator Mitt Romney's sister-in-law was found dead in a parking garage in Southern California on Friday, ABC News reported on Monday.

A preliminary investigation determined that Carrie Romney, 64, of Valencia may have fallen or jumped from the parking garage, officials said. Her cause of death was listed as "deferred," and a toxicology screening is still pending, according to the report.

"The investigation remains ongoing and investigators are waiting for an official cause of death from the medical examiner," the report reads in part.

Romney drew the ire of President Donald Trump while he was in Congress for opposing some of the president's more extreme policy proposals. Romney also voted to impeach Trump for abusing his power during his first administration.

Romney's niece, Ronna McDaniel, also became one of Trump's foes when she disavowed Trump's claim that the 2020 election was stolen.
