A new calf was born to J pod of the southern resident orcas, Center for Whale Research director Ken Balcomb confirmed Tuesday morning. But the birth to orca mother J37 is tempered with news of the loss of two other pregnancies in southern resident families. The endangered whales' population is now 74. Scientists John Durban and Holly Fearnbach, of the marine mammal research and rescue nonprofit SR3, reported that routine, noninvasive monitoring of the orcas by drone photography determined two of the three expecting orcas had lost their calves. J19 and J36 appear to have decreased significantly...

Jan. 6 supporter profanely insults former DC cop in court during Capitol rioter's sentencing hearing
An apparent supporter of January 6 defendants on Tuesday profanely insulted Michael Fanone, a former United States DC officer who was brutally attacked during the Jan. 6 insurrection.
As reported by NBC News' Ryan Reilly, the sympathizer called Fanone a "piece of sh*t" in the courtroom after the former DC cop told defendant Kyle Young that he hopes he suffers while serving his prison sentence.
Young, who pleaded guilty to grabbing Fanone as another rioter repeatedly assaulted Fanone with his own stun gun, faces several years in prison for taking part in the deadly January 6th riots at the United States Capitol building.
During a victim impact statement before the court, Fanone asked the court to throw the book at Young and give him a ten-year prison sentence.
"This is not my first rodeo... but this case is unique," he said, according to Washington Post reporter Rachel Weiner. "The assault on me by Mr. Young cost me my career, it cost me my faith in law enforcement and many of the institutions I dedicated two decades of my life to serving."
Far-right Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado has claimed to be very supportive of the United States’ military veterans. But Adam Frisch, the Democrat who is running against Boebert in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, is attacking her for failing to support bills in Congress that would benefit veterans.
On Twitter, Boebert posted, “I voted for four pro-veteran bills that were signed into law and led several amendments to provide funding for mental health and other important services for our veterans.” But Frisch, responding in a Twitter thread on September 24, countered, “Lauren Boebert is no friend of Veterans. I will protect their interests once in Washington.”
Frisch went on to slam Boebert for some of her votes, tweeting, “Lauren Boebert voted AGAINST the PACT act that gives Vets exposed to burn pits access to VA healthcare…. Lauren Boebert voted AGAINST providing training that protects Vets and VA staff.”
Boebert’s Democratic challenger went on to say, “Lauren Boebert voted AGAINST streamlining access for Vets to their own records…. Lauren Boebert voted AGAINST making education assistance more accessible for Vets…. Lauren Boebert voted AGAINST an act that would have made enrollment into the VA enrollment system automatic for Vets.”
The Independent’s John Bowden, reporting on Frisch calling Boebert out, observes, “Ms. Boebert is one of the most hardened right-wing culture warriors on Capitol Hill and frequently lashes out at her Democratic colleagues over a range of issues; late last year, her vitriol aimed at Muslim-American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota earned her widespread condemnation and calls from progressives for her removal from House committees. She recently won her primary election to run for a second term in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District; a poll released by Mr. Frisch in August showed him within single digits of his opponent, a margin not unexpected for the district which is rated R+6 by the Cook Political Report.
At a campaign event in Georgia, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker defined "woman" as a person created "from the rib of a man."
While speaking to a crowd in Cherokee County, Walker focused on transgender athletes in women's sports.
"Men shouldn't be in women's sports," the candidate said. "That's easy to know."
"I'm fixing to answer the question that has been asked and y'all seen it," he continued. "I know what a woman is. It's written in the Bible. She's from the rib of a man."
Walker added: "There's man and there's woman. That's it. There ain't another. So quit trying to create them."
