On MSNBC, host Jonathan Capehart was stunned into silence early Sunday morning as he reacted to a right-wing Newsmax figure's "racist" comment.
Capehart was addressing the issue of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, which are in danger as the federal government shutdown looms over the nation, when he said, "Let's stop talking about brother man for a minute and let's talk about, still on SNAP, what a host [on] Newsmax had to say."
Stumbling over his words and pausing throughout his sentences, Capehart added, "And you'll understand why I'm speechless after you listen to what he said about people on SNAP benefits and what they're using their benefits for."
The video played of the Newsmax host saying, "This is a program that has exploded over the last 20 years, and we are just dumping 100 billion a year into a program that we all know is being so woefully corrupted and exploited, and people are selling their benefits. People are using them to get their nails done, to get their weaves and their hair. I mean, this is a really ugly program."
Capehart then cuts in with, "'Get their weaves done, get their hair, really ugly program.' What he just said there is really ugly."
Another panelist cut in to say it "was really racist," and "was all dog whistle."
