Newt Gingrich calls for GOP to expel Matt Gaetz

The drama surrounding House Republicans escalated further on Tuesday when former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called upon the GOP to expel rebellious Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

Writing in the Washington Post, Gingrich argues that Gaetz has simply gone too far in his efforts to publicly humiliate and castrate McCarthy as Republican leader, which has left Republicans with no choice but to boot him from their conference because he's hurting the party politically.

"Gaetz has gone beyond regular drama," writes Gingrich. "He is destroying the House GOP’s ability to govern and drawing a sharp contrast with the policy disasters of the Biden administration."

Gingrich then accused Gaetz of making so much trouble simply for publicity and fundraising, which he argued were particularly poor reasons for waging a war against his own party.

Gingrich said that he, in contrast, only rebelled against his party's establishment when he had a genuine reason to do so, such as opposing tax increases signed into law by former President George H.W. Bush in the early 1990s.

"Gaetz’s motion to remove McCarthy should be swiftly defeated, and then he should be expelled from the House Republican Conference," Gingrich concluded. "House Republicans have far more important things to do than entertain one member’s ego."
