GOP debate an 'endless parade' of 'incoherent grievances': analyst

Former President Donald Trump didn't bother to show up for the first GOP debate in Wisconsin, and it seems likely he may end up skipping all of them. But he didn't have to show up, argued Amanda Marcotte for Salon.

The reason: for all the talk by Republican pundits about wanting to move on from Trump and discuss the issues, none of the candidates onstage were capable of doing that.

'Morning Joe' panelists rip 'unbelievably annoying human being' Vivek Ramaswamy

Republican presidential candidates – with the notable exception of frontrunner Donald Trump – convened for the first 2024 debate, and panelists on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" discussed the best and worst performances.

The panelists agreed that Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) fared surprisingly poorly and Nikki Haley exceeded expectations, and contributor Mike Barnicle panned upstart candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, whose recent surge in the polls landed him at center stage and who seemed to aggravate all of his rivals.

In Trump's absence, young Republicans say it was the 'Vivek Show'

If Wednesday's US Republican debate was judged on applause alone, Vivek Ramaswamy won hands down, with Nikki Haley emerging as a pleasant "surprise" -- at least at one Atlanta bar, where a group of young voters was trying to pick a candidate to back.

Gathered at a bar in the city's trendy Buckhead district, more than a hundred people, including young Republicans, watched eight of the contenders for the Republican presidential nomination with interest.

Did anyone do a damned thing to damage Trump or help themselves?

On the day before Donald Trump, who's leading the GOP primary field by an average of 41 points in the polls, is expected to surrender to Georgia authorities, eight of his competitors took to the debate stage to kick off what promises to be a long and painful election cycle.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was leading Trump in some polls as recently as February and has since crashed spectacularly as voters got to know him better, and “anti-woke” entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy — whose surprising rise to third place in the crowded field has been fueled by effusive coverage in the conservative press and who may prove to be the Andrew Yang of the 2024 cycle — came into the debate vying for sole possession of second place among GOP primary voters.

'Disqualify Trump' ad calls out GOP enablers

During the first 2024 Republican presidential primary debate scheduled for Wednesday night—which former U.S. President Donald Trump, the front-runner, is set to skip—the progressive group MoveOn Political Action plans to air an advertisement calling out his enablers in the party.

The 'fatal error' that will make Chris Christie a 'two-time loser': op-ed

Many critics of former President Donald Trump, from liberals and progressives to right-wing Never Trumpers, have accused his 2024 GOP presidential primary rivals of going much too easy on him. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and other candidates, according to that argument, have been offering only tepid criticism of the Republican presidential frontrunner.

But there are a few exceptions. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) have been much more biting in their criticism of Trump. Hurd has flat-out refused to sign a Republican National Committee (RNC) "loyalty pledge" — even if it means being excluded from debates.

Trump has not committed serious crimes, majority of likely Iowa GOP caucusgoers believe: NBC poll

Even after four criminal indictments, two pending civil trials, and a civil trial that found him liable for sexual abuse, the majority of likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa, the first nominating contest of the GOP's 2024 presidential race, say they do not believe Donald Trump has committed series crimes.

Trump has been indicted by a Miami federal grand jury on Espionage Act charges claiming he mishandled classified documents. He has been indicted by a Washington, D.C. federal grand jury on charges related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election he lost. He has been indicted by a Georgia grand jury on charges – including racketeering – related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election he lost. He has been indicted by a New York grand jury on charges of falsification of business records related to his alleged hush money payoff of a porn star, which prosecutors say was done to protect his 2016 election bid.

Stop 'kissing his butt': Trump opponent bashes GOP for backing candidate who doesn't stand 'a chance'

Many critics of former President Donald Trump have been applauding ex-New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's vehement attacks on his 2024 GOP presidential rival — complaining that other candidates, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, have been offering only tepid criticism. A leaked DeSantis debate strategy memo, in fact, even urges the Florida governor to "defend Trump," who is facing four criminal indictments yet remains the Republican presidential primary frontrunner.

Former Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas), another 2024 GOP presidential hopeful, is slamming fellow candidates for not criticizing Trump more aggressively.

‘Straight up communism’: Nikki Haley, Marjorie Taylor Greene increasingly share similar rhetoric to attack Democrats

Fifth-place Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is ramping up her rhetoric ahead of next week's first GOP presidential debate, sharpening her spear to target Democrats and President Joe Biden with charges of communism, just as top Trump supporter U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been doing.

Haley, the former Trump UN Ambassador, attempted to paint herself as a reasonable Republican when she was the governor of South Carolina, but is now rated a "Hard Core Conservative" by OnTheIssues. Over the past few years she has positioned herself as tough on China, gradually but increasingly weaving remarks attacking "Communist China," and the "Chinese Communist Party" into issues here at home.
