Former GOP congressman Adam Kinzinger Thursday cautioned new Republican challengers from entering the 2024 presidential race, saying new candidates will only serve to help former president Donald Trump ultimately prevail.
Kinzinger, who predicted in March that Trump would likely continue his candidacy and probably become more popular after being indicted, posted on Twitter that no newcomers should join the GOP presidential race.
"No more Republican candidates for President please," he wrote. "It's basically Trump/Desantis, or Christie/Hutchinson. Those are the lanes." He described the former group as "the MAGA/MAGA light" and the latter as "truth tellers."
"Everyone else will help Trump," Kinzinger warned.
When asked if this benefit to Trump is "part of their plan," Kinzinger replied that he just thinks "everyone thinks they will be President."
"At some point you have to put your vanity project aside to save the country/party," he wrote in a follow-up tweet. "Country over self can be as difficult for some as country over party."
