Kristi Noem's top aide went on a full-blown behind-the-scenes meltdown Tuesday as President Donald Trump buddied up with his old nemesis on a tour of "Alligator Alcatraz."
The drama unfolded as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis — who stood against Trump during the campaign to be the GOP's presidential candidate — outmaneuvered the homeland security secretary to stage an unexpected media tour of the controversial migrant detention center, according to NBC News.
DeSantis conducted a Fox News walkthrough of the facility on Friday, blindsiding Noem's team, according to NBC. Sources told the outlet Noem's staff — including top adviser Corey Lewandowski — were left fuming.
"DeSantis did what was best for DeSantis and got out in front...angering both Noem and Lewandowski," a Republican operative told NBC News. One source claimed Lewandowski "lost his s---" over the unauthorized media event.
On Tuesday, DeSantis hosted Trump and Noem at the facility, at which DeSantis emphasized his loyalty. "I endorsed him. Raised one of his PACs millions and millions of dollars," he said of Trump.
Trump seemed mollified, delivering an effusive assessment of their relationship. "You are my friend, and you'll always be my friend," he proclaimed.
The White House dismissed the backstage tensions as "fake news," with spokeswoman Abigail Jackson telling NBC the event was "hugely successful."
