A lawyer for the mother of the Oxford school shooter could end up in jail over her handling of sensitive information, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.
Shannon Smith, who represents Jennifer Crumbley, was ordered by a judge to appear at an upcoming hearing to explain "why she should not be held in indirect criminal contempt" for disclosing contradictory comments that shooter Ethan Crumbley made to a psychiatrist while in jail, where he said that he asked his parents to get him psychiatric help, and then stated that he didn't.
Jennifer and James Crumbley are facing separate trials on involuntary manslaughter charges for buying their son the gun that he later used to carry out the shooting.

Ethan Crumbley killed four students in the 2021 shooting. He is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
The prosecution argues that Smith crossed a line and should be punished for revealing the information that they say violated a protective order that kept Crumbley's mental health records under seal.
"If Smith is held in contempt, which means a court order has been violated, she could be sentenced up to 90 days in jail and/or ordered to pay a $7,500 fine," the Free Press' report stated.
"But all of that is on the back burner for now as Jennifer and James Crumbley's trials take precedent. They are the first parents in America charged in a mass school shooting."
