Anti-gay conservative icon Paul Weyrich kicks it

Just passing the news along. Paul Weyrich was one of the founders of the Heritage Foundation and at the time of his death, he was president and CEO of the Free Congress Foundation. During the GOP presidential race, he said this about Mitt, who didn't measure up as a real conservative.

Hilary Rosen unloads on Warren selection apologists on AC360

I don't know if you watched Anderson Cooper last night, but he did some slamming coverage of the Rick Warren debacle on his program. He basically had to referee a heated debate between Hilary Rosen editor-at-large for HuffPost and a CNN contributor, CNN's Roland Martin and Robert Zimmerman, a Democratic National Committee Member and CNN contributor. Hilary Rosen had the afterburners on last night; she had no patience for the attempt by Roland Martin to give legitimacy to Rick Warren and called it “an outrageous mistake.” Read and watch it. (H/t Towleroad re: the video):

What's the downside of Mitch McConnell peeing on himself?

Subtitle: On how Nate Silver uses statistics to prove Harry Reid has allowed Republicans to walk all over him. You know, I'm far from convinced that the auto bailout has to happen, but I am sure that the threat of the filibuster from Republicans is an abuse of that power, and it's about time that the Democrats started forcing Republicans to actually filibuster instead of just threaten it. I haven't forgotten how the Democrats had to fight to keep the filibuster alive at all a few years ago. How very nice of them to do that so that the Republicans can use the threat of the filibuster to shut down anything the Democratic majority wants to do. Wouldn't it have been rich if short-sighted Republicans had killed the filibuster only to lose control of the Senate? John McCain presented the Gang of 14 situation as evidence of what a friendly, bipartisan guy he is, but the reality is that he's just slightly less stupid and short-sighted than his fellow Republicans. And that's saying a lot when you consider that this is the man who picked Sarah Palin as a running mate.

These Are An Honest Man's Cheekbones

imageAfter a while, it had to have become obvious to everyone in Illinois that talking to Rod Blagojevich about anything involving his office was like talking to a pedophile about the location of the nearest Toys R Us. It's why this idea that Jesse Jackson, Jr. was participating in some sort of bribery scandal didn't really seem to pass muster: in Illinois, the two people least likely to get away with anything would be the son of Jesse Jackson talking to the world champion target of federal investigations.

What article of clothing do you refuse to wear?

Taking off a post at Shakesville. I've got a lot of things I'm a fashion nazi about, though a couple have been moved off my "do not" list in recent years because the Gap and other companies have figured out how to do it right (such as having a fitted band at the bottom of the sweater---turns out if it's not tight enough to puff out the sweater and is generally unobtrusive, it's not too bad). These include

Can we start forgetting about him yet?

The good news about Bush's planned presidential library is that it's going to be polluting Dallas and not Austin. For awhile there, I was positively obsessed with the idea that Bush was going to going to set up here as a form of counter-programming to the Most Awesome Presidential Library* in the world, the LBJ Library at UT Austin. Luckily, he didn't, and we can still hold our heads high. No, he's setting his library down at SMU, where it will be nestled in a wealthy, Republican neighborhood and safe from eggs and people flinging burned-out joints at it. There's also going to be a think tank, because if you're going to name a library after Bush, why not pile on with the equally comical idea of thinking?

California readers

The petition to put a ballot initiative banning divorce in California needs more signatures. I'd sign it if I could, but I'm obviously not a resident there. But if you are, hop on over and sign it. Because if Californians really are willing to fuck up people's lives to preserve the "sanctity of marriage", then they should do it to gay and straight alike.
