The National LGBT Blogger and Citizen Journalist Initiative

I'm in DC for the National LGBT Blogger and Citizen Journalist Initiative this weekend, an event put together by Mike Rogers of Blogactive and PageOneQ. The goal is to bring together LGBT bloggers, many from outside of the Beltway, to network with, educate and strategize with some of our advocacy organizations, politicians and non-profits about the political blogosphere and its role in advancing LGBT rights.

Diamonds to hold you over until February

It's the holiday season, which means a series of annoyances, including the fake War On Christmas, relentlessly stupid Christmas carols, trying to figure what to buy your loved ones whose taste is impossible to guess, and the fucking cold weather. But topping the list of the most head-bashingly annoying traditions must be the round of ads trying to sell diamonds to straight dudes by arguing:

Friday Genius Ten "Who Wants Mac and Soy Cheese?" Edition

Last, we saw a band at the Continental Club that I think has a lot of appeal: Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. The lead singer especially has a great voice, but the whole band is amazing.

How bad is the economy? 533,000 jobs lost in November

No wonder Dear Leader only comes out of his hole to pardon turkeys. This number -- unemployment meldown -- is his legacy that people will have at the forefront of their minds when Bush takes off from the White House lawn to a cushy retirement.

Principles of Enragement

imageShorter Abe Greenwald: tiny Muslim brains cannot understand the big words of Barack Obama, and, in fact, any effort to engage the wider world of Islam in a respectful and direct manner would be a symbol that we think they're all murderous savages out to kill us. Therefore, it's much smarter to bomb their asses into last Eid, because nobody listens to speeches in a post-11/4 world.

The LCR election post-mortem continues the delusions about a pro-gay McCain

Watching this organization flounder during the 2008 presidential campaign has been like observing a train wreck in slow motion. No matter how the Log Cabin Republicans tried to spin it, the man its party nominated for president, John McCain, expressed open contempt for LGBT rights even as he shook hands with LCRs and called them "my friends." The party continued to cleave to the bigot demographic all the way.

Here's a visual aid for the next time someone wonders "just what's so bad about being a nice guy, anyway?"

Gay marriage: the ultimate scapegoat

I'm sort of stunned, but here it is (via Figleaf)---a conservative who makes a valid point in an otherwise silly rant based on traditional ideas about forcing people to suffer for "morality". He's trying to parse out why voters are pro-choice but still anti-same sex marriage even though reproductive rights and same sex marriage are both ways for oppressed people to reach for the brass ring of liberty against traditional sexual patriarchal oppression morality. His conclusion is that there's a lot of self-interested straight people who see gays as a good scapegoat:

BOO HOO

I hope every man in this story walks into his house one day to find his wife having sex with two hard-bodied hotties at once while her lawyer serves him divorce papers. Toss in a couple of cute women who laugh and say, "God, you really settled for that one? Let's get you a real man."

Abortion Not Linked With Depression

Catholic church continues PR task to give Mormons cover on Prop 8

Blah, blah, blah -- the defenses for Prop 8 support keep on coming and are offensive, bigoted, ignorant -- and wholly expected. It's nice to see the Catholic church, as a "mainstream" religion, accept that its role in the battle to pass Prop 8 was to give the Mormon church PR cover and utilize the wealth of its flock and the control it wields. So now it has to take on a big role in damage control.
