McCain has a hard slog on campaign trail without Palin

Here's why the mile-wide, inch-deep celebrity of Sarah Palin is a requirement for John McCain -- he can't cut it on the stump without her because he simply cannot draw crowds or enthusiasm with his low-energy, dry, empty politicking and poor message. She is a very flawed distraction, but a distraction nonetheless because of the novelty she represents for the Kool-Aid drinkers and the fundies. This is what happened in Philly (and PA is a battleground state):

Justice Kennedy Is Here

Anthony Kennedy is teaching my Constitutional Law class today. Someone tells me that he's known for a few cases he's decided. Any suggestions for questions to ask him?

This Is What It Sounds Like When Doves Spit On Your Grave

Mumbles the Press Secretary has determined that Osama bin Laden wasn't behind 9/11.

I'm kind of okay with her falling into a deep, dark hole and people passing by the vague mumbling until she claws her way out. Just saying.

Whistleblower: McCain used Senate staff to tamper with the DEA to cover up Cindy's drug abuse/theft

Holy crap. This is red meat folks, and it's tied to the person at the top of the GOP ticket -- this is huge. Stories about Cindy McCain's abuse of and theft of prescription drugs from her charity in the 90s has been well-documented, but many of the scandalous details have not been discussed by the national media.

Shooting the messenger

In doing some research this morning for my LA Times piece, I saw some more fake outrage aimed at making sure that the media and the bloggers are cowed from criticizing Sarah Palin, which of course would free her to be the candidate, instead of John McCain, who unfortunately has failed to use his POW status to deflect all criticism. Another fundamental difference between Democrats and Republicans, beside the lying thing, is that Democrats tend to respond to criticism instead of deflect it. Sometimes, they overdo it, treating all criticism like it's legitimate and jumping around like weaklings. Obama shows signs of having more backbone than that---he doesn't hide from criticism, but he is willing to call bullshit on made-up stuff. Which, for the trolls who are preparing to squall, a much different thing. Hearing criticism and saying, "You know, I think you're making that argument in bad faith as a distraction from the real issues," is a much different beast than saying, "How dare you say mean things about me! I'm a POW/woman with five kids!" Not that I expect the disingenuous fucks that make up the Republican base to honor any reality-based differences that are inconvenient to their cause.

McCain's lobbyists - the web of connections

What a gem this is...go to McCainsLobbyists.Com to see how the GOP candidate has no credibility when he declares he's going to clean up Washington of those special interests. I guess he just means the ones not on his payroll.

FUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOUUU

CNN and Politifact are doing a joint "fact-checking" bit, which was introduced with a series of comments about how "both sides" are sending out the lies fast and furious. The ridiculous part about it is that if you go through the archives at Politifact, it's obvious that by any standard, Democrats are telling the truth far more than Republicans are.

Republican 'strategist' smacked down on Hardball for the 'lipstick' mess

Watch GOP "strategist" John Feehery get torched by Chris Matthews on Hardball last night. I have to hand it to Chris for focusing like a laser on this non-issue to get at the meat of the problem (and I've given a hard time for plenty of past wankery) -- he played that ridiculous McCain ad that says "Barack Obama on Sarah Palin" along with the lipstick on a pig comment. Matthews asked Feehery "Is John McCain saying that Barack Obama calling Sarah Palin a pig? Is he endorsing the message or not?"

That's Change Someone Else Can Define For Me

imageWatching Hardball, Chris Matthews is doing a good job of tearing into the "lipstick on a pig" story...except that he then turns around, testifies to John McCain's utter awesomeness, and then asks why people are doing this on his behalf without his approval. K-Lo declares that Palin must surely despise her own campaign's whining about the nonexistent slight against her.
